Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta is the largest inland Delta in the world and is incomparable to any other game destination in Africa.  A vast spread of channels, lagoons, forests and reed islands spreads across northern Botswana and disappears into the sands of the Kalahari.  As you can imagine, birdlife is amazing here and game viewing too is very special; not only because of the variety and number of animals but also because you can do a great deal by boat, giving a totally different perspective to the traditional bumpy, dusty game drives.

Wildlife movements are dictated by the ebb and flow of the water systems, and so it's good to know where the best areas are to go at different times of the year.  Activities offered range from only water-based to purely gamedrives and walking, depending on their location.  Some are located where both are available at certain times of the year.  It's worth knowing too that night drives and walks may be offered on private concessions, but not within the park.  When visiting the Delta choosing the right location at the right time of year is key.

There are quite a few camps and lodges in the Delta but because of the intensive network of channels and numerous little islands, you're unlikely to bump into anyone else.  The Delta is divided between the Moremi Game Reserve, a number of private concessions and several shared "blocks". Camps and lodges here do vary in standard and style, though tented lodges on wooden platforms are a firm favourite. There are some spectacularly luxurious camps and also some comfortable, simple ones but due to the carefully controlled development of tourism in the area, all camps are relatively small and command a premium.
