The following is a suggestion of how a trip to some of the monasteries and sacred sites of remote central Bhutan might look.
Fly from India, Nepal or Thailand to Paro and drive to Thimphu. Spend a full day with your national guide exploring the capital of Bhutan and perhaps visit the fascinating market if you are here at the weekend.
Drive to Punakha. Explore the local area and visit the dzong which has one of the most beautiful settings in Bhutan, at the confluence of the Mo Chu and Pho Chu, the Mother and Father rivers.
Continue to Bumthang in central Bhutan stopping en route to visit Trongsa dzong before crossing the Yotung La pass. Over the next day or two take guided walks to the various shrines, monasteries and villages of the Bumthang Valley.
Drive to the Phobjikha Valley. Spend a full day on a private guided tour, walks and birdwatching in this untouched valley. Visit in winter and you will see rare Black-necked CranesDrive to Punakha. Explore the local area and visit the dzong which has one of the most beautiful settings in Bhutan, at the confluence of the Mo Chu and Pho Chu, the Mother and Father rivers.
Return to Paro. During your stay here explore the area’s dzongs, the watch tower with its collection of stunning religious art, thangka paintings and handicrafts. Hike to Taktsang, the Tiger’s Nest Monastery, high on a cliff side to the north of Paro.
