safaris at linyanti river

Linyanti River

The course of the Linyanti River runs along the border between Botswana and Namibia's Caprivi Strip.  Starting as the Kwando and flowing on to become the Chobe, this area of the Linyanti is special because it does a sudden right turn, slowing and spreading into a mass of marshes, reedbeds and lagoons not unlike the Delta.  Further from the river are open grasslands, stands of jackalberry and palm and a variety of different habitats. The Linyanti area borders the vast Chobe National Park but is not actually part of the park.  Camps in this area are normally within private reserves and are therefore able to offer activities such as night drives and walks not otherwise available.

The Swamp is home to aquatic species such as sitatunga and red lechwe and during the dry winter months, attracts vast numbers of elephant, zebra and wildebeest that migrate up from the permanent Delta. The handsome roan and sable antelope are also seen all year round here. Linyanti is a good all-year birding destination with over 300 species spotted and so the twitchers can enjoy endless hours ticking off new birds.

Although not found in such large concentrations as Savute, predators are prevalent in Linyanti and you have a fair chance of seeing lion, cheetah, hyena, leopard and wild dog in addition to other smaller carnivores. The vegetation at Linyanti is also very attractive and jackal-berry, sausage trees and other hardwoods abound.
