Gorongosa is one of those success stories that you wish you heard more often. Following a devastating thirty year war, during which time anything bigger than a bunny rabbit was wiped out, the park has undergone a dramatic turnaround at the hands of an American philanthropist and his team of passionate wildlife experts. Although there is still a way to go until it is back to the 1950s wildlife mecca that it was, Gorongosa’s lovely scenery, great birdlife and perfectly adequate game is worth visiting if you are keen to venture off the beaten track. Another good reason to go is that there is, currently, just the one intimate tented camp, owned and run by Rob and Joss Janisch. You can therefore enjoy their infectious enthusiasm for, and knowledge of the area and explore with more freedom and flexibility than many places allow.
In the 1950s, Gorongosa bristled with tourists who flocked to enjoy its prolific wildlife and enjoy the bush. Over half a century later, having experienced the hardship of the war, the park is experiencing rejuvenation courtesy of an active partnership between the US non-profit Carr Foundation and the Mozambican government. Ecologists are overseeing the relocation of hundreds of animals from other game parks in the region and the initiatives to educate and support the local community are already paying dividends in resurrecting this wildlife paradise. There must only be a handful of camps that can boast to being the first and only camp in an entire national park. Simply tented with not an ounce of concrete in the place, Explore Gorongosa is the archetypal tented safari camp, right down to the loos with a view. Rob and Jos's natural inclination towards the personal is in evidence in the teddies on the beds, eclectic collection of artisanal furniture made by local communities and relaxed good humour.
