The wildebeest migration isn't all about river crossings...One of our favourite times is late May when the herds - in their hundreds of thousands - begin to move off the southern plains on their long journey north. After a period of plenty, spent happily grazing on the mineral-rich grasses of the southern Serengeti the wildebeest "chaps" are feeling a little bit frisky and are ready for action.
Expect cavorting, showmanship, standoffs, the odd head to head tussle and long, long lines of wildebeest, looking purposeful, but heading in totally different directions. Also, at this time of year, you can expect not to see too many other tourists…which we really like.
This area is dominated by the vast and seemingly endless short grass plains, stretching southwards from Naabi Hill farther than the eye can see - towards the extinct volcanoes of the Ngorongoro Highlands directly south, the Maswa woodlands in the south west and the dramatic Gol Mountains and open plains of Loliondo to the south east and east respectively. The southern plains are at their best between mid December and late May when this whole area comes alive as millions of wildebeest move onto the plains in search of the fresh green grass after the first rains. Nomad's Serengeti Safari Camp moves into the southwestern area of the Serengeti during April and May, as the southern plains begin to dry up and the wildebeest begin to leave their southern range and head north. This time coincides with the rut - a time characterised by herds of purposeful and demure-looking cow wildebeest trying desparatley to ignore the farcical noise and cavorting of their menfolk.
