Back to basics in Botswana
For those looking to experience the elemental safari, there are a few notable offerings in Botswana. Our current pick of the litter includes the following places:
Chobe under Canvas and Savute under Canvas for their unerring commitment to providing no-frills, stylish comfort in a mobile-tented camp format. The camps move every 4-5 days and can operate in some of the more remote parts of these great game areas.
Kubu Expeditions: after a quad-bike ride across Makgadikgadi Pans, a hot shower and three-course dinner under the stars, slip into your bedroll on the rocky outcrop of Kubu Island and let the complete silence and vast emptiness lull you to sleep.
Meno a Kwena and Camp Kalahari where you can enjoy a real safari, complete with bucket shower, simple but comfortable tents and the best of Kalahari and Makgadikgadi wildlife.
Footsteps is a mobile safari camp in the north of the Delta, geared specifically for walking. From here you can explore the myriad islands on foot and by dugout canoe. While game drives are offered here, the focus is very much on the non-motorised exploration of the Delta.
The Kanana Mokoro Trail does what it says on the tin – a dugout mokoro safari into the Delta, camping overnight in simple but comfortable dome tents. The trips are for a maximum of four people and so you can be guaranteed exclusivity and flexibility. This is really the raw, unadulterated Delta experience.
