Jan - March - On Safari January to March
This end of the year tends to be green, green, green and the experience couldn't be more at odds with the dry season. Previously dry rivers are flowing, animals are fat and happy with young animals galore. In Tanzania, perhaps the biggest event occurs as several hundred thousand wildebeest pour into the Southern Serengeti to give birth.
At this time of year the dry season haze disappears and views are spectacular. The Laikipia Plateau in Kenya, with its exceptional highland climate - hot days, cool nights - is a stunning place to be. The Chyulu Hills in Southern Kenya not only provide some of the best views of Mt Kilimanjaro, but also receive an influx of animals dispersing from Amboseli to the south.
Where ever you are, the bird life at this time of year is remarkable, with the arrival of many migrants and numerous species in extravagant breeding plummage. For something a little unusual, South Luangwa National Park in Zambia (normally very much a dry season park) is worth a visit at this time if you're interested in seeing Africa's most endangered carnivore, the wild dog.
