Mark - Mark Houldsworth
Mark has recently joined Alex as a strategic partner. Generally more patient and sensible than Alex, Mark is an ideal other half. He has a wealth of experience in East Africa, most particularly Tanzania where he first started guiding safaris in 1992. In the early days, Mark & his wife Milly established & ran many of Tanzania's best small camps, initially for Ker & Downey near the Mara river in northern Serengeti, southern Tarangire and in the Ngorongoro Highlands where he helped establish some of the highland walking routes that are in common use today.
Mark & Milly were the first managers of Sand Rivers in the Selous, working under Richard Bonham to take it from a building site to one of Africa's most respected lodges within its first couple of years. They eventually returned to northern Tanzania, to establish their own safari company based around the Serengeti and gathering together a team of some of Tanzania's best guides under the Nomad Safari Guides banner. NSG was quickly established as a major player at the top end of Tanzania safaris and was one of the first companies to introduce the concept of shared mobile safari camps shadowing the migrating herds throughout the year, across the extent of the Serengeti.
Mark was then instrumental in forming one of the most enduring alliances of the top safari camps in the country. In 2003 Greystoke Mahale and Chada Katavi in western Tanzania teamed up with Sand Rivers Selous and Nomad Safari Guides to create Nomad Tanzania which to this day encompasses many of Tanzania's best camps, the 'originals' that tend to dominate the finest locations in every area in which they are to be found.
Having recently settled back in his native Scotland, to ensure a suitably highland infusion for his growing family, Mark's role is to use his experience to identify the best up & coming areas, camps and guides across Africa, which strangely seems to involve spending a huge amount of time in first hand research in the field.
