The Natural High thing
Imagine Standing 50ft from a wild African Elephant. With your guide you've left the private landrover and now you're on your own two feet. There are no minibuses, no roads, no signs and no other tourists.
You've walked slowly and carefully - stopping often to test the wind, watching, waiting and creeping painstakingly forwards. On the way you've picked up astonishing details; the footprint of a very large crocodile, every scale etched in the early morning sand, or the midden of a civet, each dropping revealing the varied diet of the depositor.
Now here you are - so close that by using your binoculars you can practically count the lashes on the elephant's half closed eye. Each elaborate noise his drinking makes is clearly audible; a prolonged sigh, deep satisfied rumbles and a sound like someone filling a bath tub with buckets of water. These are the private noises of a relaxed animal, not intended for anyone else's ears.
You stand stock-still intensely aware of the noise your own breathing makes, relishing the extraordinary privilege of the moment. As the elephant moves off, the release of tension and palpable excitement are a heady cocktail.
The feeling this moment elicits cannot be captured or adequately described, but to us goes a long way to defining what the best safaris are all about. To some this probably sounds like a nightmare, but if this is your idea of a dream, then you'll understand what we mean by Natural High.
