What can I do on safari?
The short answer is probably "a whole lot more than you thought". But when you start to plan your safari, rather than focusing on specifics - whether you're after a walking safari, a boat safari or a driving safari for example - we feel it's important that you get a feeling for the breadth of activities that are on offer. If you like the idea of a bit of variety, then a good itinerary will offer you a selection of these activities.
This is either by using a range of camps that give you different opportunities, or by using camps which them selves offer a range of different types of safari. In the best example of the latter, flexibility is the key. An example of such a camp would be Sabuk on Kenya's Laikipia Plateau where you can combine walks, with drives, or even swimming in the river.
At the best small camps, places like Chada Camp in Katavi or Tena Tena in South Luangwa National Park your guide will discuss your interests with you and build your safari accordingly. A bit of a walk in the morning, maybe a drive in the afternoon and make a decision about tomorrow over a drink this evening.
But I dont want to have to make decisions on holiday
Some people like to be intricately involved with every detail of their safari - where the drive is going, what they're looking to find. But if you'd rather rather someone else made the decisions and you just take things as they come, then that's fine; your guide will have a plan. They'll quickly see where your interests lie and make suggestions accordingly.
I'm not after variety, I have a serious interest
For those people who would like to indulge a more specialist interest, there are plenty of good safari camps that will be able to help. And this is an are in which we have a fair bit of experience.
We've often organised expedition style walking safaris for example, over many days into some of the remotest parts of Africa. Equally, for keen riders there are some exceptional riding safaris in Kenya, again over many days, supported by mobile tented camps.
If you have a particular interest, it is well worth asking us about it. We enjoy a challenge and have an extensive network of contacts, so if we don't have the answer ourselves, we'll know somebody who does.
