When's the best time to visit Tanzania?
When asked this question it takes a tremendous effort not to say “…it depends.” But, in the interests of brevity (and so as not to annoy you too much) the simple answer is “between June and October”.
This is the dry season across Tanzania, and in most places the drier things get, the less vegetation there is (making animals easier to see). At the same time, the less water there is, the fewer places there are for animals to drink. The result is that they congregate around the few remaining water sources…which makes life easier for the lions and other predators…and, you get the picture.
As you’ll see when you browse through the rest of this site, there are numerous places that don’t fit this basic model, like the southern Serengeti, which comes into its own between December and May. Equally, for many people who aren’t interested in volume of game alone, the low seasons in many of the parks can provide a stunningly different experience as well as a lower price tag. Examples of this would be Selous, Ruaha, Katavi and Mahale between November and February.
