A seasonally good game area with a good safari experience thrown in

Leroo La-Tau (Footprints of the Lion) lies on the high banks overlooking the Boteti River which traditionaly joined the Okavango with the Makgadikgadi Pans generations ago. The lodge is built of wood, reed and thatch with great glass windows along the front of the main lounge and dining room that overlook the expansive surrounding bush. The safari style tents are set on wooden decks and each have en-suite bathrooms.   You can expect to find a toasty hot water bottle to warm your toes in the cool nights.

Abundance of wildlife in this area does depend on the seasons and so if you come in the dryer months, you can expect to see elephant, lion, wild dog and a number of large herbivores coming to drink at the water holes that still dot the Boteti. During this period, there is also a large annual wildebeest and zebra migration which brings with it the inevitable predators. The rains transport the area into a lush green oasis and game disperses but there is still much to see by way of smaller animals, many birds in breeding plumage and wild flowers.

Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans

The Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans form part of the Kalahari eco-system but are completely different from the Central Kalahari Game Reserve.  The Makgadikgadi is a massive expanse of white that stretches to the horizon, so far in fact that you can see the curvature of the earth.  Fossils of water creatures and the remnants of shells speak of its past as a great inland sea.  The edges of the pans are trimmed with clumpy course grass and islands of palm trees.  Nxai is a bit more of a grassy plain dotted with smaller pans and fossils beds.  It is relatively little visited, even in comparison to Makgadikgadi which is still largely off the beaten track. Botswana

Safaris in Botswana offer dramatic extremes.  One the one hand, the lush landscapes of the Okavango Delta and the Linyanti/Chobe River systems, on the other, the beautiful other-worldly expanse of the Makgadikgadi Pans and the Kalahari Desert.  The variety of habitats makes for varied animal and birdlife as well as beautiful scenery.   Strict controls mean that Botswana safari camps and lodges are generally small, and due to the tricky logistics of operating in a delta or a desert, a safari here is seldom cheap, and it's important to know where to go if you are looking for that authentic safari experience.
