Simple, stark and sensory for those seeking another side to Africa from lions and elephants

San Camp, little sister to the eccentric Jack's Camp presents the opportunity to encounter an other-worldly place where the curve in the earth can be seen with your own eyes. San Camp manages to be both simple and luxurious at the same time because of the attention to detail and the fact that you know that you are privileged to experience this empty part of Africa without the chance of seeing another person...surely a luxury in itself.

The tents are comfortably furnished with canopied beds and crisp sheets and a butler is on hand to attend to your every need. You shower under the stars here using bucket showers - there's no running water or electricity, but somehow, in this immense nothingness, even a hot shower seems like an incredible treat. Like Jack's Camp, you shouldn't come here expecting to see the Big Five; this is an experience for all the senses and just the silence is noteworthy. The creatures that you will encounter here, like the endearing meercat or the rare brown hyena, are highly adapted to the desert environment and fascinating, especially when your view is tempered by the remarkable knowledge of the Bushman guides.

San Camp is not for everyone but those that go with an open mind and can appreciate that there is more to African than elephants and lions, will leave with unforgettable memories.

Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans

The Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans form part of the Kalahari eco-system but are completely different from the Central Kalahari Game Reserve.  The Makgadikgadi is a massive expanse of white that stretches to the horizon, so far in fact that you can see the curvature of the earth.  Fossils of water creatures and the remnants of shells speak of its past as a great inland sea.  The edges of the pans are trimmed with clumpy course grass and islands of palm trees.  Nxai is a bit more of a grassy plain dotted with smaller pans and fossils beds.  It is relatively little visited, even in comparison to Makgadikgadi which is still largely off the beaten track. Botswana

Safaris in Botswana offer dramatic extremes.  One the one hand, the lush landscapes of the Okavango Delta and the Linyanti/Chobe River systems, on the other, the beautiful other-worldly expanse of the Makgadikgadi Pans and the Kalahari Desert.  The variety of habitats makes for varied animal and birdlife as well as beautiful scenery.   Strict controls mean that Botswana safari camps and lodges are generally small, and due to the tricky logistics of operating in a delta or a desert, a safari here is seldom cheap, and it's important to know where to go if you are looking for that authentic safari experience.
