An unparalleled horseback experience - the Delta from a very different angle

African Horseback Safaris bases itself out of Macatoo Camp, located on the south western edge of the Delta.

This is a totally different experienced for those to whom 4-6 hours in the saddle each day appeals.  It allows a non-intrusive proximity around wildlife that is impossible in a vehicle. There is something quite magical about cantering through the shallows alongside zebra or giraffe, or walking in amongst a large herd of buffalo.  That said, the camp also offers game drives, night drives, bird walks and canoeing for non-riders accompanying riding groups or during the horse-less hours.  Riding out to a charming fly camp is also a real highlight and gives a sense of complete freedom.

The camp is a simple but perfectly comfortable safari camp with en-suite facilities and the fly camping is more basic and wilder for the adventurous. Itineraries on offer vary in length so if you'd like to see this stunning part of Africa from high on the back of horse, then look no further.  Bear in mind that due to the conditions and environment, the longer rides will be restricted to experienced riders only.

7 double safari tents plus fly camping

Okavango Moremi Game Reserve

The Moremi Game Reserve is centrally located in the Delta, encompassing some of the most valuable ecological territory.  There are a number of camps and lodges within the park, and these definitely offer fabulous game viewing and some beautiful scenery.  It's worth knowing that no walking or night drives are allowed within the reserve, so if you are keen to visit the Okavango, combine camps within the reserve with one or two in the equally wildlife-rich areas that surround it, which are mostly under private management. Botswana

Safaris in Botswana offer dramatic extremes.  One the one hand, the lush landscapes of the Okavango Delta and the Linyanti/Chobe River systems, on the other, the beautiful other-worldly expanse of the Makgadikgadi Pans and the Kalahari Desert.  The variety of habitats makes for varied animal and birdlife as well as beautiful scenery.   Strict controls mean that Botswana safari camps and lodges are generally small, and due to the tricky logistics of operating in a delta or a desert, a safari here is seldom cheap, and it's important to know where to go if you are looking for that authentic safari experience.
