Botswana's first photgraphic camp, built in 1968 by veteran East Africa safari operators, Ker & Downey, Khwai River is now quite a different beast. Like it's two sister camps (Savute Elephant and Eagle Island), Khwai River has re-invented the word "luxury" in the context of a remote bush setting.
On the far eastern tip of the Delta, on the Khwai River and bordering the Moremi Game Reserve, Khwai is one of the larger camps in the Delta at 30 beds. The camp is more of a bush hotel than a camp and comes with all the trimmings; air-conditioning in your tent, minibars, a large heated swimming pool.
The camp enjoys good game viewing all year round and offers night drives in addition to game drives, guided walks, trips to a nearby Okavango traditional village and a hide overlooking the Khwai floodplains.
Many species of large mammal can be seen from the private decks as they come to drink or feed on the lush grass. These habitually include elephant, buffalo, wild dog and the big cats in addition to a large range of herbivores. Birdlife is especially good here as it includes both water fowl and savannah species, especially raptors. Spa treatments and helicopter flights are available at an additional cost.
