A no-holds-barred safari pamper with Africa on the doorstep. Not for those looking for a back-to-basics experience

If ever there was a camp that could boast the best of both worlds; indulgent luxury and incredible game viewing on the doorstep - this would be it. Huge tents that are really only resemble tents because they just happen to include canvas, rest on raised wooden platforms overlooking the surrounding bush. Large beds with mosquito net canopies look out over an enviable view and the en-suite bathroom is private and tastefully fitted out. There is a stylish main sitting area with a pool and sundeck where you are served the best in gourmet cuisine and fine cellar wines. An open viewing deck allows you to watch wildlife pass by at leisure, cold beer in hand.

This area is considered part of the seasonal wetland of the delta and floods for around 4-5 months of the year from June or July. The temporary 'island' on which Chief's camp rests, has been used for the introduction of both black and white rhino and is home to the other members of the Big Five too. Wild dog are seen frequently in this concession.

In addition to game drives, it is also possible to explore the area by dug-out 'mokoro' when the water levels allow. This kind of phenomenal game viewing and pamper-level doesn't come without a significant price-tag and you will be paying top-dollar for the Chief's experience.

Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta is the largest inland Delta in the world and is incomparable to any other game destination in Africa.  A vast spread of channels, lagoons, forests and reed islands spreads across northern Botswana and disappears into the sands of the Kalahari.  As you can imagine, birdlife is amazing here and game viewing too is very special; not only because of the variety and number of animals but also because you can do a great deal by boat, giving a totally different perspective to the traditional bumpy, dusty game drives. Botswana

Safaris in Botswana offer dramatic extremes.  One the one hand, the lush landscapes of the Okavango Delta and the Linyanti/Chobe River systems, on the other, the beautiful other-worldly expanse of the Makgadikgadi Pans and the Kalahari Desert.  The variety of habitats makes for varied animal and birdlife as well as beautiful scenery.   Strict controls mean that Botswana safari camps and lodges are generally small, and due to the tricky logistics of operating in a delta or a desert, a safari here is seldom cheap, and it's important to know where to go if you are looking for that authentic safari experience.
