A comfortable base, mainly land-based activities including walking and night-drives

Chitabe Camp is classed as a 'classic camp' within the Wilderness Camp portfolio which means that it offers a very high standard but is not quite as extravagant as the 'premier camps'.

Situated as it is, on the edge of the Delta, on an island bordering the Moremi Game Reserve in the south-eastern perennial Delta area, it has access to a wide variety of eco-systems and offers the full range of activities including walking and nightdrives.

The camp is very open and all the 'tents' and the main area are raised on wooden decking and are linked by walkways. The tents are more like rooms constructed of canvas but the informal safari look is rather marred by doors and lots of wooden fencing; presumably to stop hapless people falling off the decking; useful but not very aesthetically pleasing.  The interiors are clean, contemporary and striking and can compete with any chichi boutique hotel.

Wildlife is often to be seen wondering close by the camp and there is a hide from which you can relax and enjoy the passing game or sleep out if you are feeling adventurous. Game viewing is good here, primarily land-based, and you are likely to see buffalo, elephant, the big cats, hippo and a variety of plains game and may be lucky enough to spot wild dog.

Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta is the largest inland Delta in the world and is incomparable to any other game destination in Africa.  A vast spread of channels, lagoons, forests and reed islands spreads across northern Botswana and disappears into the sands of the Kalahari.  As you can imagine, birdlife is amazing here and game viewing too is very special; not only because of the variety and number of animals but also because you can do a great deal by boat, giving a totally different perspective to the traditional bumpy, dusty game drives. Botswana

Safaris in Botswana offer dramatic extremes.  One the one hand, the lush landscapes of the Okavango Delta and the Linyanti/Chobe River systems, on the other, the beautiful other-worldly expanse of the Makgadikgadi Pans and the Kalahari Desert.  The variety of habitats makes for varied animal and birdlife as well as beautiful scenery.   Strict controls mean that Botswana safari camps and lodges are generally small, and due to the tricky logistics of operating in a delta or a desert, a safari here is seldom cheap, and it's important to know where to go if you are looking for that authentic safari experience.
