A simple, back-to-basics experience with only non-motorised activities and the option of "sleep outs"

On a forested island in the southern part of the Delta near Chief's Island, this is a small, simple camp composed of open-fronted reed chalets tucked into the treeline overlooking the floodplains and lagoons of the perennial delta area. Delta Camp is one of the first to be built in the Delta in 1976 and offers only non-motorised activities in dug-out mokoros and walks on surrounding islands.

For longer stays, sleep outs in the surrounding area can be arranged if you are intrepid and want to get to grips with this lovely part of Africa. Setting off in your dugout for nights camping on isolated islands surely has to be one of the more memorable experiences that the Delta has to offer.  The camp's location affords excellent game viewing opportunities and the camp suits those that prefer the minimal fuss experience and are happier enjoying the wilderness without extravagance and creature comforts.  We especially like the focus on experienced guiding which can really make a safari.

Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta is the largest inland Delta in the world and is incomparable to any other game destination in Africa.  A vast spread of channels, lagoons, forests and reed islands spreads across northern Botswana and disappears into the sands of the Kalahari.  As you can imagine, birdlife is amazing here and game viewing too is very special; not only because of the variety and number of animals but also because you can do a great deal by boat, giving a totally different perspective to the traditional bumpy, dusty game drives. Botswana

Safaris in Botswana offer dramatic extremes.  One the one hand, the lush landscapes of the Okavango Delta and the Linyanti/Chobe River systems, on the other, the beautiful other-worldly expanse of the Makgadikgadi Pans and the Kalahari Desert.  The variety of habitats makes for varied animal and birdlife as well as beautiful scenery.   Strict controls mean that Botswana safari camps and lodges are generally small, and due to the tricky logistics of operating in a delta or a desert, a safari here is seldom cheap, and it's important to know where to go if you are looking for that authentic safari experience.
