Exploring the Delta the local way: in dugout mokoros, camping in comfy dome tents

This is the perfect way to really get away from it all and escape into the wild, in the private Kanana concession in the south western delta, without encumbrance.

The Mokoro Trail is just that…exploring the reedbeds and waterways, lily lagoons and forested islands the way that the tribes-people of Okavango have always done it. This trip, designed only for four guests in two tents/mokoros, gives you great access to those areas that you can't reach in a car or even by motor-boat and the silence of this mode of transport has the advantage that you can stealthily creep up on the animals and birds without disturbing them. Obviously the tribes-people of the Delta didn't have the advantage of returning after a day out boating and walking to a hot shower, cosy dome tent and delicious supper around the camp-fire to star-gaze...but you get the picture.

Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta is the largest inland Delta in the world and is incomparable to any other game destination in Africa.  A vast spread of channels, lagoons, forests and reed islands spreads across northern Botswana and disappears into the sands of the Kalahari.  As you can imagine, birdlife is amazing here and game viewing too is very special; not only because of the variety and number of animals but also because you can do a great deal by boat, giving a totally different perspective to the traditional bumpy, dusty game drives. Botswana

Safaris in Botswana offer dramatic extremes.  One the one hand, the lush landscapes of the Okavango Delta and the Linyanti/Chobe River systems, on the other, the beautiful other-worldly expanse of the Makgadikgadi Pans and the Kalahari Desert.  The variety of habitats makes for varied animal and birdlife as well as beautiful scenery.   Strict controls mean that Botswana safari camps and lodges are generally small, and due to the tricky logistics of operating in a delta or a desert, a safari here is seldom cheap, and it's important to know where to go if you are looking for that authentic safari experience.
