A spectacular experience of unadulterated wildlife and luxury in the Delta

The Chief's Island and Mombo Island part of the Delta offers exceptional wildlife and bird viewing and the variations in the flood waters make for dramatic changes in the landscape from one season to the next. It's reputation as a wildlife destination has attracted the attention of documentary film makers including the BBC and National Geographic and so there is plenty on offer for the visitor.

Little Mombo is an extension of Mombo Camp; smaller and more exclusive but in the same luxurious and beautifully thought-out style.

Mombo is an exquisitely furnished and luxurious permanent tented lodge raised high off the ground and overlooking a sweeping floodplain with some of the best game at it's feet.

Game viewing here is solely land-based and with a wide variety of plains animals and predators, along with year round birding, it is hard to find fault with this camp.  Numbers of large carnivores reach such a density at certain times of the year when they are forced onto the dry islands by the flood water, that frequent scuffles occur between the species. Unfortunately night drives are not yet permitted but this looks set to change which will make for very exciting evenings out on the prowl.

Do be warned, though, that this quality of experience doesn't come cheap.

Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta is the largest inland Delta in the world and is incomparable to any other game destination in Africa.  A vast spread of channels, lagoons, forests and reed islands spreads across northern Botswana and disappears into the sands of the Kalahari.  As you can imagine, birdlife is amazing here and game viewing too is very special; not only because of the variety and number of animals but also because you can do a great deal by boat, giving a totally different perspective to the traditional bumpy, dusty game drives. Botswana

Safaris in Botswana offer dramatic extremes.  One the one hand, the lush landscapes of the Okavango Delta and the Linyanti/Chobe River systems, on the other, the beautiful other-worldly expanse of the Makgadikgadi Pans and the Kalahari Desert.  The variety of habitats makes for varied animal and birdlife as well as beautiful scenery.   Strict controls mean that Botswana safari camps and lodges are generally small, and due to the tricky logistics of operating in a delta or a desert, a safari here is seldom cheap, and it's important to know where to go if you are looking for that authentic safari experience.
