Great for birders and those looking for a classic Delta experience - mainly on water

Xigera (pronounced Kee-jera) is a simple, stylish and comfortable camp consisting of ten tents resting on wooden platforms with private decks and a central thatched sitting and dining area. The location of the camp at the very centre of the permanent Delta and within the Moremi Game Reserve makes for great game viewing opportunities as a multitude of wildlife finds sanctuary from the flood waters on the numerous islands.

The morning newspaper; a sand pit built into a foot-bridge linking Xigera with the adjacent island records the nightime comings and goings of lion, leopard and hyena so game viewing is just as exciting in camp as it is out and about. Both water and land-based activities are available here, although both do depend on water levels and so during some seasons you may do more driving and at others, more boating. The area supports the highest density of the shy Sitatunga antelope in the Delta and birdlife here is particularly good. Specials include Pel's Fishing Owl, Wattled Crane, African Skimmers and Rufousbellied Heron amongst many others.

Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta is the largest inland Delta in the world and is incomparable to any other game destination in Africa.  A vast spread of channels, lagoons, forests and reed islands spreads across northern Botswana and disappears into the sands of the Kalahari.  As you can imagine, birdlife is amazing here and game viewing too is very special; not only because of the variety and number of animals but also because you can do a great deal by boat, giving a totally different perspective to the traditional bumpy, dusty game drives. Botswana

Safaris in Botswana offer dramatic extremes.  One the one hand, the lush landscapes of the Okavango Delta and the Linyanti/Chobe River systems, on the other, the beautiful other-worldly expanse of the Makgadikgadi Pans and the Kalahari Desert.  The variety of habitats makes for varied animal and birdlife as well as beautiful scenery.   Strict controls mean that Botswana safari camps and lodges are generally small, and due to the tricky logistics of operating in a delta or a desert, a safari here is seldom cheap, and it's important to know where to go if you are looking for that authentic safari experience.
