The small town of Bundi in southeast Rajasthan lies well protected in the ranges of the rugged Aravalli Hills that drop into rocky ravines and is approached via a narrow pass. The medieval town is dominated by a palace that rises from a fort topped hillside above it.
Bundi is a marvellous place to just wander at leisure and soak up the character and atmosphere of the narrow lanes of the bazaar with its cupboard-like shops. Tailors work on ancient sewing machines, laundry is pressed with a hot coal iron and mounds of spices jostle for space next to garish garlands and temple offerings.
The treasures of the partly decaying Bundi Palace are reached via steep cobbled ramps and stairs that zigzag between the ramparts and a gate decorated with elephants. In a gallery next to the small garden the walls are covered in stunning murals of fading turquoise, blues and greens that depict the life of Krishna, beautiful princesses and an immense royal procession. Make the 20 minute climb up a rough path to the Taragarh Fort above, complete with TV mast, and you will be rewarded with superb views of the palace, blue painted houses, and hills beyond.
