An hour’s drive downhill from Darjeeling Glenburn is a gorgeous plantation retreat in the heart of a 1600 acre working tea estate. Home to generations of tea planters the original Burra Bungalow has been beautifully restored by the current owners and the accommodation supplemented by the addition of the newer Water Lily Bungalow. Eight guest rooms are furnished with antiques and floral prints to retain the colonial charm and character.

Glenburn is a gorgeous place to simply enjoy views of Kanchenjunga and the Himalaya, relax in the garden or curl up in front of the fire in one of the cosy sitting rooms. But, if you’re feeling active there’s a choice of hikes from an hour to a day, with the option to extend this further, rolling hills and tea picker’s villages to explore, or you could take an invigorating swim in the river. Being on a working estate there’s no excuse not to learn the complete story of tea from plant to cup, and of course, to then sample some of the many varieties.  Meals are prepared from many home-grown ingredients and can be taken communally with other guests in the dining room but there are lots of lovely spots for private dining too. Glenburn can also be booked in its entirety and makes a fabulous place to stay for everyone on a family holiday or get-together for a special occasion. It makes the perfect place from which to begin or end forays into the hills of Sikkim.

Because of the long journey to reach Glenburn it’s almost essential to stay for a minimum of three nights but we guarantee that however many you book you’ll wish you could stay longer.
