Almost hidden among the fruit and spice producing trees and plants on a hillside near Periyar, Shalimar Spice Garden is a relaxing jungle retreat. Your arrival to the property is via a wooden footbridge over a seasonal stream surrounded by mango, nutmeg, cardamom and coffee to clusters of whitewashed thatched cottages.

The rooms are simply yet stylishly furnished in keeping with traditional and local styles, and each has its own veranda or hammock for sitting out listening to the sounds of thejungle. There’s no air-conditioning but at an elevation of 800m and beneath the shade of the trees the rooms are cool and airy, though due to the dense jungle can sometimes feel a little damp. A clearing has been made so that the swimming pool and surrounding terrace remain in the sun and the adjoining simple spa offers traditional Ayuvedic treatments and massage. Continental and Indian cuisine as well as Kerala specialities are available in the Falling Leaves restaurant. A fire is lit in the Red Lounge if the evening is chilly and there’s access to television and wi-fi throughout the day.

Periyar

Periyar Lake was formed by the building of a dam on the Periyar River at the end of the 19th century, and the area of forest around it in the Cardamom Hills of Kerala’s Western Ghats is now south India’s most popular wildlife sanctuary. Regrettably, the high number of visitors to the main lakeside settlement and dense vegetation means that the chances of spotting animals are not always terribly good. Read more?
