Ranvas is an absolutely stunning hotel that offers one of the most unique experiences in India. Set within the heart of the ancient Ahhichatragarh Fort in Nagaur it has taken 20 years for conservationists to restore the fort and develop the ‘abode of the queens’ of the Maharaja of Jodhpur as heritage hotel.

27 rooms are situated in 10 havelis, mansions with two or three spacious guest rooms, all with private courtyards and beautifully decorated with local Rajasthan furnishings and artefacts (and no televisions to disturb the peace).

The fort itself is enormous – you can take an evening stroll around the ramparts or enjoy a guided tour of the restored buildings by day, and have it all virtually to yourself. There is a spa and swimming pool and two restaurants that offer a choice between al fresco dining on local Mughal Sufi and international cuisine beneath billowing orange awnings, or fine dining in the cosy Amar Darbar (best on colder evenings).

The tranquil atmosphere of the fort completely changes during the annual World Sufi Spirit Festival. In February 100 guest tents are erected within the fort complex and musicians, dancers and poets from around the world perform beneath a full moon – nothing short of magical.
