Situated on the banks of the river, Diphlu River Lodge is the newest and by far the best accommodation for visitors to Kaziranga National Park. The grounds of the lodge have been carefully planned to preserve the natural environment with railed bamboo walkways over the paddy fields and crops, linking the cottages and machan together without disturbing the agriculture. The eco-friendly operation of the resort includes re-cycling grey water for irrigation.

As the area floods during the monsoons all the buildings are raised on stilts and designed to make full use of local materials including cane, thatch and bamboo that blend with the natural surroundings. The 12 air-conditioned rooms all have a balcony but the detached cottages have the best views. Overlooking the Diphlu River and national park on the other side they are ideal for bird watching and occasionally catching sight of rhinoceros. Keep the torch provided handy after dark as the power supply is erratic in this area. Regrettably the lodge loses its feeling of remoteness during the night when the sound of hooting trucks passing nearby carries through the walls at night.

High above the river is the machan, a jungle platform with sitting and dining areas opening onto a large veranda where you can swap the day's jungle stories over a drink, sink into sofas with a book from the library or relax by the fireplace on chilly winter evenings. Buffet meals often include delicious Naga and Assamese specialities but the lovely staff is always amenable to creating alternative dishes on request.

The resident naturalists are extremely knowledgeable and will accompany you on safaris into the national park, in a dugout canoe or on a riverside walk looking for otters, buffalo, deer or rhino. Walks to local villages or nearby tea plantations can also be arranged.
