Built in the 1940’s for a member of the Tanjore royal family, this property has recently been renovated by the Dune group and opened as a small boutique heritage hotel in early 2012. Situated in the heart of town it is just a short walk from the Tanjore Palace and Big Temple.
The 14 rooms are contemporary in style and hugely quirky with strongly contrasting blues and whites broken by unusual wall or ceiling paintings. There are no views but in-room facilities include wi-fi and a basic mini-bar. Take care on the slippery floors in the bathroom! In keeping with the hotel group’s environmental practices, hot water is solar heated and linen and bath products are organic. So are the vegetables from farms at Tanjore Hi’s sister hotels which are used in a variety of continental and Indian dishes served in the open-air rooftop restaurant.
There is no elevator to the three floors and as this is a new hotel there are bound to be one or two teething problems, but in our mind it looks as if it’s going to become a popular place to stay.
