Quilalea Island derives its name from the Swahili word 'lala', meaning 'to sleep' having a long history as a place of rest from the days when ships used its safe mooring for refuge. Lying as it does on the old trade routes between Pemba to the south and Kilwa and Zanzibar to the North and now within the southern section of the Quirimbas National Park.
Just 35 acres in size and, unusually for this area, malaria-free this is the archetypal desert island, with the only inhabitants being those who support {Quilalea} lodge, created in 2002 as an upmarket beach hotel for just 18 guests.
