A low-key, unpretentious safari camp on community land bordering Amboseli

The first in the series of four Porini Camps, Amboseli Porini manages to maintain the simplicity and charm of traditional tented camps whilst providing all the necessary comforts. The Porini Camps have not tried to over-extend themselves and are characterised by simplicity and good consistent standard of comfort, service and food and well informed guides. On the well-established Selenkay Conservation Area, a community-conservation initiative, the camp is ideal for those that are not too fussed about having the finest linen sheets and the ultimate in stylish accoutrements. It is well-furnished with a relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff and is well-placed for exploring the Amboseli National Reserve as well as the immediate conservancy which has a good population of wildlife. A key feature of the camp is it's commitment to involving the local Maasai community in it's conservation efforts. Most of the staff in the camp and conservation area are employed from the local Maasai community.

We were then festooned with unromantic images of a Kenyan safari epitomised by fleets of mini-buses with Kilimanjaro in the background. Read more?

Kenya

Kenya is the most established safari country, and consequently you have to step a little off the conventional route to find real wilderness, but it’s certainly there.  Kenya also has much going for it as a family destination, and also a good number of very individual safari camps and lodges with a personal approach that makes your experience very special.  Kenya also has a particularly diverse ecology which ranges from snowy mountains to true desert, rolling grassy plains filled with wildlife to craggy scrub intersected with dry riverbeds, sparkling beaches and volcanic ranges.
