Kakamega Forest is a small reserve established to protect the last Kenyan remnant of the tropical rainforest that extends from West Africa and Congo (formerly Zaire)

Kakamega Forest is a small reserve established to protect the last Kenyan remnant of the tropical rainforest that extends from West Africa and Congo (formerly Zaire). The forest is a valuable natural water catchment and contains many species found nowhere else in the country.  These include over 300 bird species, over 350 species of trees, 27 species of snakes (although there's no history of snake bites since the park started 20 years ago). The forest is also home to over 400 species of butterflies (about 45% of all recorded butterflies in Kenya), reptiles, molluscs and 7 primate species.

Accommodation is limited here but for people with a special interest in any of the incredible diversity of flora and fauna on offer here, well worth a visit.
