Kiwayu, Kenya

1/4 The remote beaches of Kiwayu
© Kiwayu The remote beaches of Kiwayu

classic, stylish, barefoot beach luxury

Guide Price: From: $735 To: $810

Kiwayu was built by one-time professional hunters Alfredo Pelizoli and Johnny Aniere over three decades ago and was the first lodge on the Kenyan coast to make use of woven palm matting or 'kikapu'. The 18 'bandas' are located right on an empty stretch of beach and this is one of the really great things about this place... you can step right out of your room onto the sand and go for a walk or for a swim and know that you are miles away from the nearest town, telephone or hotel.  This place has a wonderfully wild feeling (we think that's a good thing) that many places just can't compete with.

The rooms are comfortably furnished with antique Swahili furniture and colourful scatter cushions, and each verandah is complete with a hammock strung up for a proper chill-out. Predictably, the food is based around the fresh seafood caught locally and cooked along either Swahili or Mediterranean lines. For a special treat or a romantic escape, the 'Baobabs of Kitangani' is an intimate retreat for two.

Still retaining its old style and barefoot luxury credentials we think Kiwayu is well worth consideration if you're looking to kick back in style for a few days post safari.

Kiwayu describes the island and facing mainland that lies a fair distance north of Lamu. Remote and undeveloped except for two small lodges, the area is, however served by a regular schedule flight from Nairobi. Read more?

Kenya is the most established safari country, and consequently you have to step a little off the conventional route to find real wilderness, but it’s certainly there.  Kenya also has much going for it as a family destination, and also a good number of very individual safari camps and lodges with a personal approach that makes your experience very special.  Kenya also has a particularly diverse ecology which ranges from snowy mountains to true desert, rolling grassy plains filled with wildlife to craggy scrub intersected with dry riverbeds, sparkling beaches and volcanic ranges. Rumour has it that Catherine Ronan used to be a spy. We find this slightly hard to believe as she loves nothing more than to divulge her travel secrets and infect other people with her enthusiasm.
