A unique, memorable, wild and very African experience

Anything carrying a handle as romantic as 'Starbeds' has a great deal to live up to. Fortunately, the Koija Starbeds are something really very special. Picture a raised wooden platform over looking a portion of Africa totally unspoilt by human activity rolling away into the distance. The platform is partially covered (for practical purposes) by a thatch roof, under which rests the weirdest sleeping contraption you're ever likely to encounter.

Resembling something like a huge double bed on some sort of bizarre Flintstone wheelbarrow, which can be wheeled out into the open for a night of sleeping in the open air under the stars (safely shrouded in a big mosquito net). As an added bonus, the owners and indeed hosts of the starbeds are the local Maasai, who cook in a traditional kitchen, barbecue style, as partners in a joint venture with Loisaba.

You can reach the star-beds either on foot, horseback, camel or vehicle and can combine your stay with the other set of starbeds, Kiboko, or the main Loisaba Lodge (30 minutes drive away) or one of the other lodges in the area like Sabuk or Ol Malo.

Laikipia lies outside the jurisdiction of National Parks, and is somewhere to get out of a vehicle and embrace the numerous safari activities that Kenya has to offer. Read more?

Kenya

Kenya is the most established safari country, and consequently you have to step a little off the conventional route to find real wilderness, but it’s certainly there.  Kenya also has much going for it as a family destination, and also a good number of very individual safari camps and lodges with a personal approach that makes your experience very special.  Kenya also has a particularly diverse ecology which ranges from snowy mountains to true desert, rolling grassy plains filled with wildlife to craggy scrub intersected with dry riverbeds, sparkling beaches and volcanic ranges.
