the classic lamu haunt for rakes and princesses

Guide Price: From: $150 To: $180

Peponi was started by the Korschen family in 1967 and is still run by Lars, Carol and Niels to this day. Aside from it's great location on the edge of the Swahili village of Shela on Lamu island, only a few minutes walk from the biggest, emptiest beach you've ever seen, the hotel's life comes from the personalities who make it tick.

Lars and Carol have succeeded in keeping the vitality and life of the place as fresh as the day it was opened and continually inject new ideas into the delicious menu and a great deal of energy into keeping the hotel looking lovely. Each room has a sea view, most with a little personal balcony and their distribution around the gardens, on different levels make for a very snug and private feel. The terrace along the front of the dining room overlooking the channel makes your evening G'n'T taste even better, while a cold Tusker beer from the outside bar can see you mingling with the motley collection of Shela characters that make Peponi's their regular 'watering hole'.

The swimming pool is a great feature, set in a secret walled garden and dominated by two huge baobab trees. Although the beach is only a few minutes walk away, it is nice to be able to go for a quick dip whenever you feel like it.

There is plenty to do around Lamu with trips to Manda Island, where you can walk or swim, easily organised and the bustling narrow streets of Lamu Town an easy 30min walk or a short boat trip away. Peponi is a great spot for those that enjoy the sun and the sea but don't necessarily want to lie prone on a beach all day...there's plenty to offer by way of interesting things to do and culturally, it can't be beaten.

Kenya

Kenya is the most established safari country, and consequently you have to step a little off the conventional route to find real wilderness, but it’s certainly there.  Kenya also has much going for it as a family destination, and also a good number of very individual safari camps and lodges with a personal approach that makes your experience very special.  Kenya also has a particularly diverse ecology which ranges from snowy mountains to true desert, rolling grassy plains filled with wildlife to craggy scrub intersected with dry riverbeds, sparkling beaches and volcanic ranges.
