The Shimba Hills were designated as a National Reserve in 1903 and several extensions since then have resulted in a fairly substantial area covering mainly forest and grassland. Lying 45km south-west of Mombasa and reached by road from there, the Shimba Hills are a beautiful area of protected indigenous forest with views of the Indian Ocean and at 500m, a cool change to the coastal heat.

Of particular interest here is the birdlife, elephant and buffalo, an endangered population of the elegant sable antelope and the rather peculiar looking red-bellied coast squirrel. There's a reasonable network of roads around the park, though they can be tricky in the wet. This is a lovely, unusual place with lots of quirky aspects to make it a memorable addition to a beach holiday.
