The broad sweep of the Tana as it reaches the sea, having travelled all the way from Mt Kenya, is a dramatic sight. The delta region is recognised as an important area for birds and hosting the Tana River Primate National Park which protects two highly endangered species; the Mangabey and Tana River Red Colobus.

This part of the Kenyan coast is often overlooked as a beach destination because it's awkward to reach; It's not on any of the regular scheduled routes so it's a bit of a mission to get to. There is limited accommodation in the area, there being only one lodge on the beach, but if you are willing to go the extra mile, there is a big pay-off. Isolated and remote, with a real wilderness feel, this area includes high sand dunes overlooking coastal forest, a network of creeks, wetland and mangrove swamps and long empty beaches. The birdlife here is fantastic and with access to all the hidden waterways and the interior, it is a twitcher's paradise.

Depending on the time of year, the sea may not be clear and blue as the outflow from the river will muddy it but if you don't mind swimming with a little vegetable matter and red earth, in return for complete privacy, this is your spot. There is plenty to do around this area, though not by way of fancy restaurant and nights on the town, so for nature lovers and those that want peace and quiet and are prepared to put up with a little extra cost to fly here or a bit of discomfort to drive, it is a place that will measure up to expectations.
