Tsavo East is the lesser well-known and least visited part of the two Tsavo National Parks and has a long and turbulent history. Hit hard by severe drought and a massive depletion of elephant populations as a consequence of this and widespread poaching, the park has made a recovery and the wildlife is thriving. Galdessa occupies and enviable patch on a broad sweep of the Galana River where elephant and hippo are numerous. In fact, at one stage, a big bull elephant who had a penchant for oranges had to be encouraged out of the camp by the park rangers because he kept raiding the kitchen. The rooms are open and elegant, with natural touches such as giraffe vertebra as soap dishes, mingling with refined fabrics and canopy mosquito nets. The area is peaceful and the camp is a relaxing base from which to explore this area of Tsavo. There is a wide variety of bird and animal life, and the camp organises extravagant picnics to accompany drives, or sundowners at the end of a guided bushwalk. There is also an additional Private Camp next to the main camp that can be taken exclusively.

Tsavo East

Tsavo National Park was established just after the Second World War and with an area of 21,812 Km2, it is the largest park in Kenya. Even in the late 1800s it featured as the vast wilderness through which the aptly nicknamed 'Lunatic Express' railway line had to be constructed on it's way from Mombasa to Nairobi. Read more?

Kenya

Kenya is the most established safari country, and consequently you have to step a little off the conventional route to find real wilderness, but it’s certainly there.  Kenya also has much going for it as a family destination, and also a good number of very individual safari camps and lodges with a personal approach that makes your experience very special.  Kenya also has a particularly diverse ecology which ranges from snowy mountains to true desert, rolling grassy plains filled with wildlife to craggy scrub intersected with dry riverbeds, sparkling beaches and volcanic ranges.
