Lake Turkana, lying on the far northern border of Kenya with Ethiopia, is a harsh but incredibly beautiful lake. Surrounded by wind-swept, rock-strewn desert, and fiercely alkaline, the lake offers little succour to the local tribes people nor to the smattering of wildlife that scratches a living in this moonscape environment.

The only beast that seems to thrive here is the Nile crocodile which grows to an indecent size in the lake. The three hidden crater lakes on Central Island are the most highly concentrated breeding ground for these prehistoric animals in the world. The area has been moulded by volcanic activity and the South Island has a ridge of ash cones that have been seen to erupt within the last century. It is possible to visit both islands by boat from the mainland, principally to climb on of the craters and witness this unusual landscape.
