We are unashamedly enthusiastic about Jardins de la Medina.  It is one of the most perfect riads for families and couples alike.  In many ways it blurs the definition of a riad and a hotel.

Formerly a Royal Palace, this 19th century residence is situated in the heart of the medina, close to the Royal Palace, and a 20 minute walk from the Djemma el Fna.  On one's arrival by car, nothing suggests that behind the high walls at the end of a peaceful street is a vast expanse of greenery.  Luxuriant gardens (among the largest of any riad) planted with centuries old palm, orange, olive and jacaranda trees are laid out in the middle of the traditional buildings. Hammocks stretch between two palm trees, sofas nestle under banana fronds and terraces are scatted through the gardens.

There are 36 rooms all with views of the garden and the attractive swimming pool which is heated in the winter.  The restaurant and bar are close to the pool and meals are taken on the outside terrace in the warmer months.

Despite the larger size of this riad, no feeling of intimacy is lost.  There is charm in abundance, bird song fills the scented gardens and there are plenty of little private areas to sit and read and relax.  The riad has an excellent hammam, spa and massage room, one of the most enticing beauty centres in the medina, hairdresser, small boutique and open air fitness centre.  But perhaps one of the best additions is the cookery school.  Under the supervision of a chef, guests can learn to make tagines and the cornes de Gazelle and experience the tasting menu with a flavoured mint tea.

The rooms at Les Jardins de la Medina are distinctively decorated, and divided into three categories, comfort, superior and privilege.  All have air-conditioning/heating, satelite tv, DVD players, wi-fi connection, safes and minibars.  All rooms either have a terrace or balcony with garden views.  The lift betwee floors makes this an ideal riad for those who have problems walking.

Marrakech

Few cities can be as beautifully sited as Marrakech. The surrounding land is watered by abundant rivers and streams from the Atlas Mountains, which provide a spectacular backdrop as they rise some 12,000ft. In the summer months, the heights are often lost behind a heat haze, but the winter visitor has the best of it, for then the peaks are covered in snow, always a beguiling sight in Africa. Read more?

Morocco

Morocco is a country of immense and diverse physical beauty, with some of the most inspiring areas of pristine wilderness in Africa. It's also superb value and just a few short hours flight from the UK.  From the snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas to its wave-strafed Atlantic coastline and on south to the billowing, seemingly endless sand dunes that run away into the Sahara Desert.  For a country so close to Europe it’s exhilarating to find such an intact culture and epic North African landscape with real contrast to anything European at almost every turn. Leave Marrakesh and head south and in less than an hour you’re climbing into the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains.  This is magnificent trekking country where you can thread your way among small Berber villages, supported by mule trains, either on foot or on horseback, supported with a light tented campRead more?
