The large town of Ouarzazate is poised between the Tiz n'Tichka pass and the Draa Valley

The large town of Ouarzazate is poised between the Tiz n'Tichka pass and the Draa Valley.  In autumn and winter Mount Toubkal forms a dazzling white backdrop to the north.

The town is sprawling but there is really only one main street with some five star hotels, shops and petrol stations.  This is a good base for a one night stay during a circuitous route of the south, or for a longer stay if day forays are being made into Draa Valley and Dades and Todra Gorges from here.

The road to Zagora follows the course of the Draa river and is the dream area for the film location manager.  Numerous films have been set here; Lawrence of Arabia, Casablanca and Bertolucci's The Sheltering Sky to name but a few.  Stunning date palm oases and mud ksours of varying sizes line the valley all the way to the heat soaked town of Zagora - on the edge of the Sahara desert.
