Mozambique's crystal, warm oceans, idyllic far-flung islands and remote wildlife areas lend themselves to those eager to step off the beaten-track.

Mozambique offers some of the best beach holidays for those that have a love for private island getaways, turquoise seas and pure white sand.  The marine life is colourful, plentiful and varied so this is one of the best places you could be if you enjoy diving or want to learn.  The wildlife areas are pretty wild but gradually opening up so for safaris in Mozambique there is increasingly good reason to explore these beautiful parts of the country (especially since they are still well off the beaten track).  Go straight to our selection of Mozambique experiences.

After the damage and economic collapse sustained during prolonged war, the country's infrastructure is still relatively undeveloped, although a great deal of investment is pouring in and the changes are noticeable.  Better roads, happening towns and increasingly popular tourist spots are becoming more evident.  Happily, though, the country still offers sleepy backwaters and remote wilderness for those that crave an escape.  Find out when to visit Mozambique.

The Quirimbas Archipelago off the far northern coast of Mozambique is one of the most remote and unearthly beautiful marine destinations in Africa.  More accessible, but still lovely, is the Bazaruto Archipelago, easily reachable from Johannesburg.  If you like a bit of culture with your beach escape, then Ibo Island is the place to go.  For a wild safari experience in a little visited area, then Gorongosa National Park or the Niassa Reserve offer reasonable wildlife, and excellent wilderness.

Catherine Ronan

Rumour has it that Catherine Ronan used to be a spy. We find this slightly hard to believe as she loves nothing more than to divulge her travel secrets and infect other people with her enthusiasm.
