There must only be a handful of camps that can boast to being the first and only camp in an entire national park. Simply tented with not an ounce of concrete in the place, Explore Gorongosa is the archetypal tented safari camp, right down to the loos with a view. Rob and Jos's natural inclination towards the personal is in evidence in the teddies on the beds, eclectic collection of artisanal furniture made by local communities and relaxed good humour.
Very much a part of the surrounding bush punctuated by yellow-fever trees, the camp is not just a place to lay your head in the evening. As old Africa hands will know, there is just as much pleasure to be gained from spending and afternoon recumbent in a hammock and watching the life of the bush happen around you as dashing frantically around in search of big game.
The environment lends itself to walking but game drives and the compulsory sundowners also make up the day’s activities. Buffalo, elephant, hippo and lion are found here along with sable, oribi, nyala and other less easily seen herbivores. And there are simply masses of birds including some pretty special ones. You are also likely to enjoy brunches under shady trees, visit the latest animals to be introduced to the park or the village of Vinho to find out about the “Benefits Beyond Borders" scheme that is working toward a sustainable future here.
The mountain is an entirely different facet of Gorogongosa. Ascending through the community small-holdings and rich forest beyond to find cascading waterfalls and cloudy heathland, it is impossible not to feel a bit disoriented. This area is only accessible on foot, with simple fly-camping along the way. For keen birders, both the narina trogon and green-headed oriole are among the many specials that you may encounter here.
