A far-flung escape on the shores of a vast clear lake

Nkwichi is onomatopoeic; mchenga nkwichi means the “sand that squeaks" which is rather a lovely thought. A little bit of beach paradise on the shores of Lake Niassa (as it is known in Mozambique), Nkwichi is the product of a few adventurous friends and their interest in conservation and helping the local community. Simple, warm, friendly and relaxed, the little stone and thatched lodge is set on a perfect white bay with a backdrop of forested hills that run into the Lake.

Lake Malawi is one of the largest in the world and is home to an amazing array of tropical fish. It isn’t salty so is lovely and soft to swim in and its calm, clear blue/green waters are utterly inviting. Thatched rooms are built around the big smooth boulders in amongst the trees and there is a sense of being a bit of a castaway here.

You can happily fill your day doing just about nothing here. Alternatively you can explore the beautiful forest on foot, keeping an eye open for the plentiful birds, monkeys, bushbuck and even leopard. You can snorkel, swim and canoe or take a spin in the lodge’s catamaran. It should be noted that Lake Malawi is not crocodile free but they do seem to avoid the clear shallows and so you can take advice from the lodge on where is safe to swim.

Nkwichi falls into that exclusive category of lodges which are little bit of a mission to get to – which is half its charm...it wouldn’t be the same if you could just arrive there. It is more easily approached via Malawi than Mozambique and makes a good “beach stop" at the end of a safari in Zambia or Malawi itself.

Lake Niassa

Lake Niassa is the Mozambican name for the more commonly used Lake Malawi.  The Lake lies between Mozambique's northwestern most province and Malawi.  One of the Great Rift lakes, Niassa is 600km in length and is home to over 1000 species of fish.  Many of the fish found in Lake Niassa are cichlids which have adapted a vast array of colours, physiological and behavioural adaptions to compete and survive.  The underwater scenery in Lake Niassa resembles something like a tropical marine habitat only without the coral. Mozambique

Mozambique offers some of the best beach holidays for those that have a love for private island getaways, turquoise seas and pure white sand.  The marine life is colourful, plentiful and varied so this is one of the best places you could be if you enjoy diving or want to learn.  The wildlife areas are pretty wild but gradually opening up so for safaris in Mozambique there is increasingly good reason to explore these beautiful parts of the country (especially since they are still well off the beaten track).  Go straight to our selection of Mozambique experiences.
