Matemo lies on one of the larger islands of the striking Quirimbas Archipelago. Operated by Rani Resorts (of Indigo Bay, Medjumbe and Pemba Hotel), Matemo is one of the larger beach lodges in Quirimbas. The thatched chalets are appointed slightly like hotel rooms (rather than rustic beach lodges), with all the amenities including air conditioning and satellite TV.
The location is pure Mozambique beach bliss and there are a variety of non-motorised activities such as wind-surfing, snorkelling from the beach and kayaking included in the rate. Fishing and diving are available too but at an additional cost.
Matemo is reached via a light aircraft flight from Pemba.

If Quirimbas were to appear in the dictionary, it would do so along with words such as pristine, remote, unexplored, relaxed and all those lovely things that are becoming increasingly rare in our world. Being at the far northern extreme of Mozambique, this collection of thirty-odd islands and coral heads is understandably less developed than its southern counterpart, Bazaruto.
