One might imagine Vamizi coming about during a dark winter evening when one fellow says to another; “I’m fed up of this cold and darkness. I wish I could escape to some desert island‚Äù. They stick a pin in a map on some remote white speck in the Indian Ocean off Mozambique and create the opportunity for others to experience a little piece of paradise.
Whether or not this is the case, Vamizi Island certainly ticks many boxes in terms of remote, heavenly spaces and the lodge itself does nothing to detract. Combining style with informality, this is precisely the kind of place you would want to escape to with your old flip flops, a faded pair of shorts and a straw hat.
Private and vast, the villas look directly onto impossibly white sand and blue sea. Vamizi have not underestimated the importance of plenty of private space so there are large decks on each room in addition to a lovely main lounge. Muted tones and pale wood contribute to a clean, coasty look which hits the nail on the head.
The diving around here is some of the best on the Mozambican coast and there is also the chance to go whale watching as the humpbacks migrate between August and October, and deep-sea fishing for the big game fish including tuna, sailfish and marlin.
As you might have guessed, Vamizi is properly off the circuit and so it takes a little more effort to get to than some of the alternatives in Mozambique, however, it is certainly won’t disappoint. Vamizi can be also be reached from Tanzania via Pemba as well as through Johannesburg.
