Simple but comfortable and well located for Damaraland's desert wildlife and the rock art at Twyfelfontein

Doro Nawas is located on a community conservancy on the dry Aba-Huab River on the edge of Damaraland. Surrounded by open plains and views of the distinct red-rock mountains beyond, this camp is a good option for those that want a slightly more affordable desert experience without compromising on quality.

At sixteen rooms, Doro Nawas is a bit larger than some of the other camps in this area, but retains its rustic safari lodge style with rooms built from natural materials, all with lovely views. Great sliding doors allow you to open the room right up and you can even enjoy a sleep-out on the verandah to make the most of the incredible stars in this neck of the woods.

The main activities at Doro Nawas are drives in search of the desert elephant and other unique flora and fauna. It’s a good place to get out and about on foot too, and you’ll be surprised at the variety of things that exist in this harsh landscape. One of the highlights here, though, is the ancient rock engraving at Twyfelfontein. This open museum preserves some of the world’s richest examples of San culture and is definitely worth a visit.

Damaraland

Damaraland is a stark, perpetually surprising landscape of red rock mountains interspersed with some pretty tenacious vegetation and the odd misplaced sand-dune or grassy meadow. Harsh lunar vistas, deep silence, unbelievable starry skies and a geological Disneyland are the order of the day here. This is where desert-adapted elephant, rhino and lion roam (though they are not a dime a dozen so you should plan for some exciting hours “on the case" if you expect to have a chance of seeing one). You can actually join researchers at Desert Rhino Camp where you can specifically head out to track rhino. Surprising as it may sound, there are people here too, though not many.  Now referred to as the Damara, these unsuspective folk were relocated from South Africa in the 1960s under the Odendaal Plan and somehow scratch a living from land that is neither well-suited for crops nor livestock. They are charming, bubbly people and you will no doubt spot the odd tumble-down homestead looking like something from the Midwest while you travel through this area. Read more?
