The eastern wedge of the Caprivi is cradled by the Kwando, Linyanti and Zambezi Rivers, rendering the periphery a rich wildlife habitat while the interior merges into dryer grassland and mopane woodland. This is an important game corridor linking the Okavango Delta in Botswana with the Sioma Ngwezi National Park in Angola.

Elephant, buffalo, hippo and a number of antelope including roan, sable and oribi are found here and you also have a reasonable chance of seeing wild dog. The birdlife along the river and in the reed beds can be pretty spectacular, especially during the breeding season when all the bishops don their mating plumage, and when the bright pink and turquoise carmine bee-eaters nest in the sandy banks.

This neck of the woods is actually not as inaccessible as it might look and can be most easily reached via Kasane or Victoria Falls. In fact, it is probably most appropriate as part of a safari that includes Botswana, Zimbabwe or Zambia unless you are on a long-haul self-drive safari through Namibia.

Who to talk to

Catherine Ronan

Rumour has it that Catherine Ronan used to be a spy. We find this slightly hard to believe as she loves nothing more than to divulge her travel secrets and infect other people with her enthusiasm.
