A low-key, private bush experience with the benefit of both the private reserve and Etosha. Particularly well known for wildlife wondering into camp.

The Ongava Game Reserve on the southern boundary of Etosha National Park is an exclusive patch with just four camps in 30,000ha of pristine bush. 340 species of bird have been counted here, including 10 of Namibia’s 14 endemic species. Add to that the opportunity to see Hartmann’s mountain zebra, red hartebeest, eland, endemic black-faced impala, rhino and lion plus a host of others and there are plenty of reasons to spend a good few days here. The Reserve is well placed to make use of the western area of Etosha, which is restricted to guided-only game viewing, unlike the eastern side where self-drive safaris are the norm.

The tented camp is a small, relaxed and comfortable place without being OTT. Eight tents are hidden away in a valley at the base of a dolomite hill within the Reserve. The main stone and thatch restaurant building overlooks a waterhole to which a wide variety of animals flock both day and night.

The camp has developed a bit of a reputation for exceptional wildlife activity at close quarters so things can get quite exciting. So if you are of a nervous disposition, the idea of sleeping in a tent with the possibility of lions wondering around the camp-area might not appeal.

In Ongava, you are free to enjoy both walks and drives within the reserve or venture into Etosha. The tented camp is a good choice for those that enjoy comfort without bling and to whom the idea of a tented experience appeals.

8 tented rooms on wooden platforms

Etosha National Park

The Etosha National Park lies to the north of the country and covers a whopping 22,000km². The actual Pan, formerly an ancient lake, dominates the eastern side of the park at over 100km wide. Standing on the edge, this immense dry white crust dances with mirages in the heat and you can see the curvature of the earth. Read more?
