A comfortable, well situated spot from which to explore the Namib

The pointed thatched roofs of the “kulalasî are set against the backdrop of the Namib’s red dunes. Wave-like patterns are cast into relief and then set on fire as the sun dips below the horizon and stars begin to light up the night sky in impossible numbers. The main area is decked out in a loose nod to north Africa but the desert here is uniquely Namibian. Comfortable tented rooms with desert views from private verandahs offer a no-frills base for exploring this private reserve.

Kulala Desert Lodge has a sneaky back-entrance to the Sossusvlei area and if you want to see the sunrise over these mammoth dunes and beat the crowds, this is a great spot to spend a night. Out on walks and drives, guests here can enjoy the unusual flora and fauna, big skies and wall-to-wall scenery. If you are one for a little adventure, you can sleep on the roof in a comfy bedroll and wait for shooting stars. Alternatively, a horse ride into the desert or a balloon trip high above the great patterns and colours may provide you with some photos to make the folks back home green with envy.

Sossusvlei

Sossusvlei is one of the best known areas of the Namib Desert.  It is a large flat pan where the Tsauchab River is thwarted in its bid to reach the sea, by a swathe of red dunes.  On good rain years, the river still follows this course and for a short while, visitors here will be met by the incongruous sight of a pool of water at the base of some of the world's highest dunes.  But for most of the year, this is very much a desert.  Huge dunes tower against the cobalt blue of the sky and from the top, views of the wave-like formation of sand extend to the horizon.
