The Waterberg Plateau is a relatively inaccessible spot in the central highland area of Namibia not far from the town of Otjiwarongo. Although notable for lovely views and some of the more unusual animals to which it provides sanctuary, the Waterberg does not typically feature on the Namibia milk run. This is precisely why it is worth considering, especially if you are taking you are an old Africa hand or considering a leisurely self-drive trip.
Nearly sub-tropical vegetation is supported by the mainly springs that give the mountain its name and the rich habitat is rendered even more appealing by being fairly tricky to get to. Thus it has made a perfect protected area for sable, buffalo and rhino in addition to the Cape vulture (reduced from a couple of thousand across Namibia to only a handful here at Waterberg). There are other rare birds here including Ruppell’s parrot.
The main activity on the Plateau itself is a range of self-guided nature walks but you can go on organised drives here or in the surrounding game farms. It is not far from the Cheetah Conservation centre where you can see efforts at cheetah rehabilitation and get up-close and personal with these impressive carnivores and get some great pictures. There is also the off-beat activity of observing the Vulture Restaurant in action. This has recently become a critical life-support for vulture populations failing due to contaminated carcasses and other human interference.
