The Kavango River carves through the Caprivi on its journey to the Okavango Delta at this point, giving rise to a particularly tasty wildlife area and, relative to the arid face of the rest of the country, a bit of an oasis. The Mahango Game Park is a bit of a hidden gem and is definitely worth visiting on your way through the Caprivi or down into Botswana. The river and reedbeds give onto open grasslands, acacia woodlands and thick stands of teak. Over 400 birds have been recorded here and during the rains (November – March), the foliage is alive with flowers and bright plumage.

The dry season between April and November is when the real action is. Large herds of elephant migrate between the Okavango and Angola and have actually been known to do quite a bit of damage to the trees in this park. Lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, hippo and crocodiles are also found in Mahango.

The Park is small and the tracks are few and can be quite treacherous in both the dry and wet months when they become either sandy or slippery respectively. However, if you hire a local guide, you can be assured of a rich game experience here. Big game aside, it is worthwhile coming in search of sable, roan, tsessebe and sitatunga which are all found here.
